Cha he or Cha ze are used to display tea leaves before using a Cha Shaku to gently push them into your teapot or Gaiwan.
These Cha he are made by me using tree branches from hardwood species. The origin of the wood varies, but most of these cha he were made from wood off of our property or antique wood that was found in our 80 year old home.
Each Cha he is hand carved with a spoon/scoop chisel and usually finished with high grit sanding. It is a time consuming process and often results in breaks when trying to achieve a thin walled result.
Finally, cha he are finished with several coast of raw linseed oil and polished in-between for a satin finish or French polished for a more glossy finish.
